Opening the 1992 album Dirt, "Them Bones" immediately grabs attention with a chugging guitar riff played in an unusual 7/8 time signature. Jerry Cantrell wrote the track and delivers the gritty verses, while Layne Staley provides the soaring harmonies for the choruses. The lyrics explore the inevitability of death, drawing inspiration from Cantrell's father bringing bone fragments home from his service in Vietnam. This visceral introduction sets a dark tone for an album that would become a cornerstone of the grunge movement.
Columbia Records released the single on September 14, 1992, following the success of their debut Facelift. Recorded at Eldorado Recording Studios in Burbank and One on One Studios in Los Angeles under the guidance of producer Dave Jerden, the song captures the raw sound that defined the band's second era. Although it did not crack the Top 40 mainstream charts, it climbed to No. 24 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Tracks chart and reached No. 30 on the Modern Rock Tracks chart.
Rocky Schenck directed the music video, which features the band performing in a large dirt pit. A central visual element is a puddle reflecting surreal stop-motion imagery of animals fighting and a baby being born, symbolizing the cycle of life and death. The clip received heavy rotation on MTV and became famous after appearing on an episode of Beavis and Butt-Head, where the character Butt-head declared it "the coolest video I've ever seen." The song remains a staple of live performances, often serving as an encore opener due to its high energy.
