Heath Ledger remains a towering figure in global culture, currently recognized as the 235th most famous person in the world, a standing that has held steady since the previous cycle. His influence is particularly potent within his homeland and region, where he ranks as the 7th most famous person in Australia and the 2nd most famous person in Oceania. In the realm of cinema, he holds the position of the 45th most famous person in Hollywood, while also securing the spot of the 5th most famous person from Australia. These placements reflect the enduring resonance of his work across media coverage, search trends, and consumption patterns worldwide.

The community surrounding his memory does not operate under a single formal moniker; fans generally identify simply as Heath Ledger fans or Ledgerites rather than adopting a unified brand name like those seen with living stars. Their gatherings are defined by ritual and remembrance rather than active chart-pushing campaigns. Digital spaces on platforms such as Instagram host groups dedicated to preserving his legacy, but the primary activities involve charity work supporting mental health awareness and children's hospitals, values deeply connected to his life. Annual tributes mark his birthday on April 4th and the anniversary of his passing on January 22nd, where individuals share personal stories of how his performances shaped their lives. The mythology of his craft persists through retellings of his intense preparation for The Dark Knight, including the six-week isolation in a hotel room that produced a performance so terrifying it reportedly caused physical reactions in audiences. Stories of his playful side, such as knocking out a tooth while jousting with a broom during A Knight's Tale rehearsals, contrast with the somber lore of his final days. Christopher Nolan has frequently cited Ledger as the benchmark for on-set intensity in recent years, ensuring that his impact continues to define expectations for acting prowess decades after his death.[แก้ไข]

At age 10, Ledger won the Western Australia Junior Chess Championship, showcasing early strategic discipline before leaving Perth for Sydney at 16 to pursue acting full-time. He created an extensive diary to develop the Joker's personality for The Dark Knight, isolating himself for weeks to perfect the character's voice and mannerisms. Despite being Australian, he was known for his convincing American and British accents throughout his career. His posthumous Oscar made him the fourth-youngest winner of the Best Supporting Actor award. A legendary story among fans recounts how Ledger knocked out a tooth while jousting with a broom during rehearsals for A Knight's Tale, proudly showing the crew his bruises rather than using a stunt double. Another verified event involves his isolation in a hotel room for six weeks prior to filming The Dark Knight, resulting in a performance so terrifying that audiences reportedly fainted or felt physically ill during screenings. Recent retrospectives also highlight a period where a poor performance in a 1996 project convinced him to consider quitting the profession entirely, illustrating that his success was forged through overcoming professional failures.[แก้ไข]

A moment of silence observed during the Academy Awards ceremony just weeks later, delivered by presenters including Sean Penn and Julia Roberts, honored a performance that had already secured a posthumous Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his role as the Joker in The Dark Knight. The film itself became the highest-grossing release of 2008, while fan vigils spontaneously erupted outside his former residence in New York and at his childhood home in Perth, Australia, where thousands gathered with candles to mourn. This outpouring of grief followed the discovery of Ledger unresponsive in his fourth-floor apartment at 117 Christopher Street in Manhattan on January 22, 2008, where he had been staying to complete voice work and prepare for his award campaign.

An official investigation by the NYPD Homicide Division initially treated the case as suspicious before concluding there were no signs of forced entry or foul play. On March 5, 2008, the New York City Office of Chief Medical Examiner ruled the death an accidental overdose caused by acute intoxication from a toxic combination of six prescription medications: oxycodone, hydrocodone, diazepam, temazepam, alprazolam, and diphenhydramine. No criminal charges were filed against the prescribing physicians or the pharmacy, and the family focused on preserving his legacy rather than pursuing litigation. A private funeral service was held on February 13, 2008, in Perth, attended only by close family and friends, after which he was cremated and his ashes scattered over the Indian Ocean near his hometown.

Posthumously, he was inducted into the Walk of Fame in Perth in 2009, and the Australian government established the Heath Ledger Scholarship to support young actors studying abroad.[แก้ไข]

iFANN currently estimates Heath Ledger's estate to be worth approximately $20 million as of 2026. Since his death in 2008, the estate has grown significantly through ongoing revenue streams. The primary source of income is royalties from his filmography, particularly The Dark Knight, which continues to generate substantial licensing fees from streaming platforms, television broadcasts, and home video sales. The film's enduring popularity, along with periodic theatrical re-releases, ensures a steady flow of income. The estate also earns from merchandise, including Joker action figures, posters, and collectibles. Ledger's posthumous Oscar win in 2009 boosted demand for his films, leading to increased streaming viewership and sales. The estate is managed by his family, including his parents, who oversee royalty collection from SAG-AFTRA and international guilds. Ledger died without a formal will, so his assets were distributed through Australian and U.S. probate, with his daughter Matilda as a primary beneficiary. Real estate holdings in New York and Australia also contribute to the estate's value.[แก้ไข]
