Enterbrain launched this publication in February 2008 under the title Fellows!. The editors rebranded it to Harta in February 2013, adopting a name derived from the Indonesian word for treasure. This shift signaled a strategic pivot toward curating distinctive artistic works rather than pursuing mainstream commercial trends. The magazine releases ten issues annually, typically appearing between February and August as well as October and December.
The periodical serves as a primary home for literary seinen series that prioritize narrative depth over standard action tropes. Yuki Urushibara's Mushishi found its serialized run here, exploring supernatural folklore through episodic storytelling. Kaoru Mori followed with Otoyomegatari, a historical romance set in the Caucasus Mountains during the late 19th century. Mitsuaki Kanno's The Great Passage also began serialization within these pages before adapting into multiple media formats including anime and live-action films.
In April 2023, coinciding with the tenth anniversary of the identity shift, Enterbrain introduced Harta Alternative as a digital spin-off platform. This initiative aims to identify emerging talent who may eventually transition to the main print magazine. Works serialized within these pages have secured prestigious accolades such as the Seiun Award for Mushishi and the Manga Taisho for Otoyomegatari.
