David Portnoy's fanbase is as distinctive as the man himself. There is no formal, separate name for Portnoy-only fans; instead, they are known collectively as 'Stoolies,' a term that binds them to the entire Barstool Sports ecosystem. This is not a passive audience. Stoolies are famously loyal and combative, mobilizing en masse to defend Portnoy in his very public feuds, such as his July 2026 clash with Shaquille O'Neal, where they flooded social media with support. Their devotion is channeled into consuming and amplifying Barstool content, and they actively participate in the 'One Bite' pizza review phenomenon, recommending local pizzerias and turning Portnoy's visits into community events. The fanbase has also rallied behind charitable efforts like the Barstool Fund, a COVID-era initiative fronted by Portnoy that raised millions for small businesses. Portnoy, for his part, engages directly and unfiltered with fans across platforms, and his pizza reviews often serve as a spotlight for small, fan-recommended shops.

Portnoy's fame, as evaluated by iFANN's Global Fame Engine in August 2026, currently does not hold a placement in the published rankings. He has been evaluated but is not ranked in the Global Top 1,000 or any Top-100 scope list. While he is a household name in sports and pop culture media, his fame has not yet translated into a formal iFANN ranking, leaving his exact position unquantified.[แก้ไข]

Portnoy taught high school math for two years before starting Barstool, and he remains a lifelong Boston Red Sox fan, famously crying on a livestream when they won the 2018 World Series. He has a pizza slice tattooed on his left arm, has never had a cup of coffee, and his dog Moose is a recurring presence in his content. He once set a Guinness World Record for most pizza reviews in one hour, eating 50 slices. Beyond these well-known facts, one of the most enduring legends is the origin story of Barstool itself, how a scrappy free print paper handed out on Boston subway platforms grew into a media empire, a story Portnoy has told in his 2026 memoir, 'Cancel Me.' Another iconic moment was his visit to Pizza Di Vita in Fairless Hills, Pennsylvania, which drew local news coverage and a massive crowd, illustrating the real-world impact of his reviews. Portnoy's public feud with Shaquille O'Neal in July 2026, sparked by comments about Tom Brady, became a viral sensation, with Stoolies rallying to his defense. And his allegations about Alex Cooper's exit from Barstool in August 2026 dominated sports-media discourse, adding another chapter to his lore.[แก้ไข]
