For four years he maintained absolute secrecy regarding his stage four colon cancer diagnosis while filming major blockbusters. In 2018 he delivered the commencement address at Howard University and was awarded an honorary doctorate. During the 2018 MTV Movie Awards ceremony, he presented his Best Hero award to James Shaw Jr., a real-life hero who had saved lives during a church shooting. A persistent story from his legacy involves his silent battle with illness; fans widely recount how he endured chemotherapy and radiation treatments without public disclosure while completing films like Avengers: Endgame and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Chadwick Boseman spent his final days at his residence in Los Angeles, California, where he remained under the care of his family while continuing to fulfill professional obligations despite a severe decline in health. On August 28, 2020, at the age of 43, he passed away from complications related to colon cancer, a diagnosis his family confirmed had been kept private for four years during which he completed multiple major film productions. The ruling was established through official statements issued by his widow, Taylor Simone Ledward, and Marvel Studios rather than a public autopsy or coroner's inquest. Immediate global tributes followed, with vigils held in South Africa and the United States, a moment of silence observed at the 2021 Academy Awards, and a surge in streaming numbers for his filmography on Disney+.

His funeral was a private ceremony attended only by close kin, while Howard University subsequently instituted an annual observance known as Chadwick A. Boseman Day. Posthumous releases including Da 5 Bloods and Ma Rainey's Black Bottom received critical acclaim, earning him posthumous nominations, while his voice work as T'Challa in What If... secured an Emmy Award in 2022. In 2024, he was inducted into the Hollywood Walk of Fame, though legal disputes regarding estate administration emerged in July 2026 when his brothers petitioned to remove his widow from her role as administrator.[แก้ไข]

During his lifetime he earned substantial paydays from Marvel films with reports indicating he received around three million dollars for the first Black Panther movie and additional sums for the Avengers sequels. He supplemented acting income through producing work on titles like 21 Bridges and endorsement deals that grew after his superhero role gained worldwide popularity. Real estate holdings in Los Angeles added to his assets along with investments in production companies focused on diverse storytelling. Since his passing in 2020 the estate has seen continued revenue from licensing deals, merchandise tied to the Black Panther character, and royalties from his final films. The Netflix release of Ma Rainey's Black Bottom and the Disney+ animated series What If generated new income streams. Archive footage in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever brought further payments to the estate. His widow Taylor Simone Ledward along with family members manage these affairs with support from entertainment business managers. The estate value has grown modestly through careful handling of intellectual property rights and posthumous projects that keep his performances available to new audiences.[แก้ไข]
