The core issue is that by disavowing him, El-Sayed ensures he won't get grace or charity from the audience seeking those things. It disturbs anti-Zionists who view Hasan as genuinely not an antisemite at all. Why throw someone under the bus when they aren't even doing anything wrong? The idea that these comments placed Jews in a dangerous predicament or posed any threat is simply silly. If El-Sayed had defended him properly, he could have stated clearly that Hasan's career advocates against antisemitism. He could have said he would never have an antisemite appear alongside him on the campaign trail. In fact, he should have made it clear he wouldn't support a candidate aligning with antisemites. Courting individuals described as antisemites places progressive candidates in dangerously unpredictable territory. You are not an anti-fascist if you are courting self-declared antisemites. Disavowing comments on Jewish people effectively admits those comments were antisemitic, which forces people to ask why anyone would court the interest of such a person. This whole approach feels like a massive error in judgment. Hasan predicted that other candidates like Chriss Rabb, Melat Kiros, and Darializa would handle this differently. They wouldn't answer this way if asked. Instead, they would say he's not antisemitic and make it clear they wouldn't work with him if he was. The expectation is that true anti-fascists don't engage with self-proclaimed bigots, making this disavowal a strange move for someone claiming to be part of that movement.
