DOJ sends 1,000 monitors to 2026 midterms

DOJ Assistant AG Harmeet Dhillon confirmed the Justice Department is deploying 1,000 election monitors for the 2026 midterms to watch polling places and guard against fraud. The Civil Rights Division has long sent out monitors to polling places throughout the country to ensure compliance with the federal Voting Rights Act. Approximately 700 people were deployed during the 2024 presidential election.

On Monday, the head of the DOJ's Civil Rights Division announced she's planning to expand that operation in November with an additional thousand federal monitors deployed to polling places around the U.S. The Justice Department has sent out Civil Rights Division attorneys and staff in the past to ensure compliance with the Voting Rights Act, which prohibits discrimination and intimidation. Former officials told CBS News about 700 people were deployed to monitor polling sites during the 2024 presidential election. Majority of those were DOJ attorneys and staff.
