Tom Cruise DIGGER first reactions

The first look at DIGGER has critics split clean down the middle, and the movie doesn't even arrive until 2026. Alejandro González Iñárritu directed this apocalyptic satire, and depending on who you ask it's either "baffling," "unpleasant" and "a mess," or "a brave and gorgeous art film" and "one of the most visually inventive, conceptually audacious, and unpredictable studio movies ever made." Where the reviews actually converge is Tom Cruise. He plays Digger Rockwell, and the word coming back is that he committed fully, with more than a few calling it the most interesting work he's done in years. Riz Ahmed and John Goodman drew strong notices too, along with the production design and Emmanuel Lubezki's cinematography. The film surrounding all of that is murkier. Iñárritu's satire reads as fascinating and audacious to some, while others have tagged it a "hollow misfire," "often unfunny and flat," or a movie that can't pull its many ideas together. That's a wide gap already, and it's why DIGGER lands among the fall's most intriguing releases. Theatrical release is set for October 2.
