Elephant mother and calf

A calf doesn't just grow up near its mother. Elephants raise their young inside a whole network of relatives, and that network reaches further than aunts and sisters. Other herd members step in to shield and steer the little ones too, which matters more than company out in the wild. There, that extended family is often the difference between making it and not.
