Asma Jama and Dawn Sahr

A beer glass shattered across Asma Jama's face at an Applebee's in Coon Rapids, Minnesota back in October 2015. Jodie Burchard-Risch attacked her after yelling, "Speak English! Or go back to your country!" Asma, a Somali-American woman in a hijab, ended up with 17 stitches on her face, arms, and chest. Jodie pleaded guilty to hate-motivated assault and served time. Then her sister Dawn Sahr reached out online with just, "Are you okay?" They wrote letters, met at StoryCorps in Minneapolis in 2016, and Dawn told her, "They say blood is thicker than water, you have to stand by your family no matter what. But sometimes you have to draw a line. And you are my line." Standing with Asma meant Dawn was cut off by most of her family, including Jodie. Three years later they sat down again, and Dawn said, "You are so strong. That strength gave me the strength to do what I did." Asma answered, "In the worst of my life, you taught me that… sometimes humanity is what we need." Out of a hate crime, they grew into friends so close they're almost sisters
