The number of millionaires in the United States has seen its share of ups and downs since the turn of the millennium. In 2000 the figure stood at roughly 7.1 million. It then dropped to about 6.8 million in 2001 and fell further to around 6.5 million in 2002. A rebound brought the total to some 7.0 million in 2003. Growth resumed strongly after that, reaching approximately 7.8 million in 2004, 8.5 million in 2005, 9.2 million in 2006, and a peak of nearly 9.8 million in 2007.
