Pike's attorneys and witnesses say her heart never stopped during the procedure, and that she kept snoring right through it. That's where Tennessee's plan fell apart on Wednesday, September 30. Two doses of pentobarbital had already gone in, meant to end her life for killing 19-year-old Collen Slemmer back in 1995. Instead, medical staff stepped in and had her moved by ambulance out of Riverbend prison in Nashville. Hours earlier the U.S. Supreme Court had cleared the morning stay, letting the state proceed, and the whole thing was set to be the first execution of a woman in Tennessee in over two hundred years. Governor Bill Lee has since ordered an investigation and cancelled every remaining execution in the state for this year. What condition Pike was in by the morning of October 1 wasn't clear.
