the rail network in Ukraine relies on Russian Gauge tracks, which means the only places with enough locomotives are former Soviet states and Finland. Russia is running a campaign to destroy these trains and has taken out dozens of them over the past month. The attacks don't seem to worry about high-level Western officials being close by or how near they get to borders. A drone strike hit a train station right at the Polish-Ukrainian border and blew up a locomotive while another train was carrying Boris Johnson, Sautter who advises Chancellor Merz on foreign and security policy, several members of the German parliament, plus security advisers from the UK, France, and Italy returning from an event in Kiev. If this destruction keeps going, countries like Moldova, the Baltics, and Finland will have to donate their locomotive stock until it runs dry. Without air defense, losing these engines would happen fast and leave those nations without a working rail system too. It would be strange if Eastern Europe and Finland gave away all their rolling stock to help Ukraine and then ended up train-less just like we have now with air-defense and artillery shells.
